District Recognition Dinner
It’s almost here! The annual Tecumsa District Recognition Dinner is taking place on April 26. This year Palmieri’s Restaurant at 101 Penn Plaza in Turtle Creek will be hosting the event, and rumor has it that the food is excellent. Dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by program, awards, and FUN. So start thinking about those wing nuts, turnbuckles, and other special district awards…so we can thank all those folks who have made Scouting so successful in our area. This is also the event where individuals can be recognized for earning council level awards such as the Silver Beaver. To be nominated for this special award it requires a long time service to the Scouting program, along with other contributions to youth in the community. So get ready for some good eats and good fun at the District Awards Dinner. Please call Tonda Bruner at 412-824-8679 with any questions or comments.
 Tiger Cub Spring Recruiting
Here’s a question. Where do next year’s Tiger Cubs come from? Answer: This year’s Kindergartners. So why not get into the schools now and invite them to a fun spring time Pack activity to get them thinking about joining? If they have fun, come June 1, chances are they’ll be chomping at the bit to sign up. Then comes the summer activities that they’re sure to talk about with other 1st graders come the fall. So here’s what you do. Contact your friendly district executive, and tell him that you’d like to do some spring recruiting. We’ll work with you and the schools to set up the talks and the flyer. A little work now, really helps with your recruiting efforts in the fall. And remember… It’s never a bad time to recruit kids into scouts. Tecumsa’s monthly Roundtable

 Winterfest wrap-up
Another year and another great event. Winterfest has proven itself to be one of the most popular events of the Scouting year. Despite a healthy gust of wind and low temperature, close to 300 youth and adults braved the elements and came to Camp Twin Echo for the weekend. A special thanks to John Hacket, Carl Terxler and seasoned staff who by combined efforts managed to pull off this year’s Klondike Derby without a hitch. The Cub Winterfest offers would-be Boy Scouts the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in this special time of year. It also allows these young Scouters to get a taste of what to expect when they crossover into the Boy Scouts Spring Camporee
Be ready for Mission X!! Coming up in April will be a Spring Camporee you will not soon forget. All activities are taking place after the sun goes down!! Keep a look out for a complete information packet along with a registration sheet at Tecumsa’s upcoming roundtables.
 Boy Scout Adult Leader Training
The purpose of Boy Scout Adult Leader Training is simple….to provide every adult Scout leader with information and resources that will help them deliver the best possible program to each boy.
- New Leader Essentials - This is the initial training for all new adult leaders in any program of the Boy Scouts of America. A Scout Leader needs to attend New Leader Essentials only once; upon completion of New Leader Essentials individuals take part in leader specific training related to their particular program and position of responsibility.
- Basic Leader Training - Designed for leaders in Boy Scout troops (SM, ASM, troop committee members) who regularly participate in troop meetings and outdoor activities. There are four sessions; each session includes coverage of several related topics: Sessions 1 through 3 make up Part I (Troop and Program Skills) of the Basic Leader Training for Boy Scout Leaders; Session 4 is Part II, Introduction to Outdoor Skills. Only after completing both parts is a leader considered trained.
Part I (Troop and Program Skills)
Spring 2008
April 21, 8, May 5 (Three Monday nights) location TBA, 7-9:45 pm each night
Participants must complete New Leader Essentials prior to attending either of these sessions.
Part II - Introduction to Outdoor Skills
May 17 and 18, Camp Twin Echo
Participants must have completed all sessions of Part I (Troop and Program Skills) before participating in this session) School Presentation for Recruiting Fifth and Sixth Graders
How can your troop consistently recruit 12-20 sixth graders every year? Try offering a Scouting presentation in your local school.
Most importantly, remember that from a boy’s point of view, the Three Aims” of Scouting are: CAMPING, CAMPING, CAMPING!
Call your district Key-3 for more information on getting your troop involved in spring recruiting. |
