Ten Boy Scouts and one Venturer from the Greater Pittsburgh Council have returned from an experience of a lifetime—participating in the 21st World Scout Jamboree in England to help celebrate the founding of the Scouting movement by Lord Robert Baden-Powell 100 years ago.
More than 40,000 Scouts from across the globe attended the 13-day Jamboree, which took place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, and Gilwell Park in the United Kingdom. Beyond marking the centennial, the purpose of the event was to provide a dramatic demonstration of Scouting’s ability to develop world brotherhood, a spirit of friendship and a source of understanding among young people.
The World Scout Jamboree program combined Baden-Powell’s insights—learning by doing, working in small groups and giving responsibility to youth. Key elements of the jamboree program included:
- World Village—Six areas on the jamboree site that Scouts will explore. Activities range from creativity to technology and culture.
- The Gilwell Adventure—An action-packed day of adventure and challenge at the home of Scouting in the UK at Gilwell Park.
- Global Development Village—A chance to explore many of today’s key world problems through practical workshops run by specialists from the United Nations and other organizations.
- Community Action Day—Helping to make a difference in the community through involvement in local projects in partnership with Scouts and community groups near the jamboree site.
Scouts toured many famous sites, including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Piccadilly Circus, Soho, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Windsor Castle.
