Second Annual Ten Commandment Hike

Hike Route: See Below

Event Description:  What is a Ten Commandment Hike?  It’s a unique and exciting way to embrace the concept of religious tolerance, learn local history, participate in community service, and have fun.  And it’s a good way to work off that Thanksgiving dinner!

The Ten Commandment Hike is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and their families. The hike will be just under four miles, visiting ten religious institutions in the Shadyside and North Oakland sections of Pittsburgh.  Registration will begin at 8:30 AM on Friday, November 23, at The Rodef Shalom Synagogue located at the intersection of Fifth and Morewood Avenues in Pittsburgh.  The program will begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

Directions:  Take Fifth Avenue to Morewood Avenue in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh.  Rodef Shalom Synagogue is on the corner. Please park in the CMU lots on Forbes and Morewood Avenues.

The cost of the hike is $6.00 per hiker if fees are paid before November 9th.  The fee includes a patch, hot chocolate along the way, juice at lunch, and dessert.  ALL hikers must be registered and paid before commencing the hike.  Bring a bag lunch, water, snacks, and a canned good for the East End Cooperative Ministries food bank.  Please dress appropriately for the weather.  After November 9th, the fee is $9.00 per hiker.

At each stop, for approximately 20 minutes, a member of the Clergy will discuss a specific Commandment, describe the basic theological tenets of their religion, and point out interesting architectural and historical aspects of their House of Worship.  They may also take a few questions.  We will hike as one group to each place of worship in the order of the Commandments.

The hike will visit Houses of Worship and/or be addressed by members of the following religious denominations:

  • Judaism
  • Byzantine Catholic
  • Roman Catholic
  • Lutheran
  • Christian Scientist
  • Episcopalian
  • Unitarian
  • Presbyterian
  • Hindu
  • Baptist

Lunch will be approximately midway through the hike at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Craig Street.

Restrooms will be available at various stops along the way.  Please respect the facilities.

The hike will end close to 4:30 PM back at Rodef Shalom Synagogue.  Small children are welcome and they may hike for free, but it is strongly recommended that you bring a stroller.  Excessively loud or unruly behavior will not be tolerated.  All Scouts and Scouters MUST wear a Class “A” uniform

For additional information, please call the Council Service Center at 412-471-2927.

The registration form may be downloaded by clicking here.  Payment must be received at the Council offices by November 9, 2007.  Registrations and payments after that date will be charged $9.00.
