Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Awards Dinner (continued from home page)
The event chairman is the Honorable Livingstone M. Johnson, senior judge with the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, who was the council’s first African-American Eagle Scout in 1945 and is a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.
“The dinner will highlight the council’s accomplishments, objectives and recognize the unsung heroes who have given exceptional service to disadvantaged urban and rural youth,” said Judge Johnson.
Andrew Stockey, WTAE morning news anchor, will serve as emcee for the evening.
Scoutreach focuses on providing youth from at-risk urban and rural communities with the opportunity to participate in the positive activities of Scouting.
The dinner is held each year in the memory of Whitney M. Young, Jr., the U.S. educator and civil rights leader who led the drive for equal opportunity for African-Americans in industry and government during his ten years as head of the National Urban League until his death in 1971.
