For Venturing Events and Outings

Dear Venturing Activity Participant,

Your personal safety in all situations is a paramount concern of the leadership of the Venturing program and Greater Pittsburgh Council, BSA. As a result, all Venturing activities will have a minimum of 2 adult leaders to provide supervision of every aspect of our program. The leadership standards of the BSA, for co-ed groups, require us to have at least one female and one male, over the age of 21.

Being a coed group implies that male and females will do activities together, but housing and after hour’s activities are conducted in separate areas as designated by the event’s leadership. Female adult leadership will provide direct supervision of females in housing arrangements, and direct adult male leadership provides supervision of males.

Being members of the Venturing program, we expect you all to be familiar with the Venturing Oath and Promise. These words should be reflected in your behavior and participation in each Venturing activity. Being leaders of good character also requires you to be considerate of others and use good judgment. If you are unsure about what to do in certain situations, or if something does not seem right, ask an adult for some direction.

Here are some general rules to follow while participating in Venturing Activities with the Greater Pittsburgh Council. This is not a complete list, and additional rules may be made known to you at the beginning of an activity.

1. Males and Females are to respect each others privacy; separate housing (sleeping quarters)and sanitary facilities, are to remain separate at all times.
2. An adult leader must always be able to account for your whereabouts, especially after hours.
3. Respect others. No fighting, foul language or disruptive behavior will be tolerated. Any instance of this kind of behavior is cause for removal from the activity at your own expense without refund of activity fees.
4. Sexual harassment and sexual behavior will not be tolerated and is also cause for removal from an activity.
5. We don't have a maid service. Show respect for your location and others by keeping your personal area clean, as well as offering to help clean group areas, such as; the dining room, restrooms, shower facilities and meeting rooms. When you are assigned to help clean an area, please do your part, cheerfully.
6. Know the rules. Being a youth leader, you are expected to be familiar with the rules and behave accordingly. If you are unfamiliar with a rule or believe that a rule is unfair, seek out the leadership of the activity and share your concerns with that person.
7. Be on time and participate in all the posted activities. This event runs on a schedule and mandates that you be thrifty with your time. We will insure that no one gets left behind, but being late would disrupt the fun for everyone involved. Keep in mind that the event leadership reserves the right to change plans and scheduling based on the needs of the group and circumstances beyond our control. If you are unable to participate or choose not to participate in a part of this event, bear in mind that your absence must be excused and accounted for by the event leadership.
8. Get plenty of sleep, at night. We have a lights out time posted for that reason. This will be a busy event and sleep will give your body the rest it needs to function alertly in this physically demanding activity.
9.  Be safe. Make good decisions and use good judgment. This activity includes a degree of risk, based on your ability. Your personal safety is our greatest concern. If you observe someone else behaving in an unsafe manner, you have a responsibility to report it to the event leadership.
10. Respect all adult leadership. Even those that are not on the event leadership team. We count on our adults to serve as chaperones and mentors.
11. Have fun! Within these rules, you are challenged to have a great time! We feel confident that if everyone abides by these rules, fun is a guarantee, for everyone. Laugh and be enthusiastic, it’s contagious. Relish this opportunity to make new friends and have a positive, memorable time.

If you have any questions or concerns about the rules or would like to make any suggestions, please feel free to contact George Barron, Venturing Staff Advisor, 412-325-7968 or gbarron@bsamail.org
